LiPo vs NiMH Batteries: What RC Toy Buyers Should Compare
LiPo and NiMH are different rechargeable battery chemistries. Compare the complete approved power system, including the battery, toy electronics and charger, before choosing an RC product.
LiPo vs NiMH: the specification differences
LiPo means lithium polymer; NiMH means nickel-metal hydride. They need charging arrangements suitable for their chemistry. Matching the connector or physical size alone does not establish that one pack can replace another.
| Specification | NiMH | LiPo |
|---|---|---|
| Typical nominal cell voltage | 1.2 V per cell | 3.7 V per cell |
| Example nominal pack voltage | Six cells: 7.2 V | Two cells in series: 7.4 V |
| Charging | Use the approved NiMH charger or mode | Use the approved LiPo charger and required balancing arrangement |
| Buyer confirmation | Pack rating, connector, dimensions and charging instructions | Pack rating, connector, protection requirements and charging instructions |
Nominal voltage is a labeling reference, not a full description of the voltage range during use or charging. The examples above do not make these packs interchangeable.
Which battery is better for an RC toy program?
There is no universal choice for every toy. Ask which power system the product was designed and approved to use. Compare the complete retail experience: what the pack includes, how charging is explained, how replacement batteries are obtained and what the instructions require from the operator.
For two competing products, request the actual battery label and the approved charger specification. Record the pack chemistry and rating alongside the toy model. Do not infer runtime from capacity alone; request the supplier's stated method and conditions for any runtime claim.
A battery information checklist for the RFQ
- Exact toy model and approved battery or battery-part reference.
- Chemistry, nominal voltage, cell arrangement, capacity and physical dimensions.
- Connector details and whether the battery is removable or built in.
- Whether the battery, charging cable and charger are included in the quoted pack.
- Approved charging instructions, compatibility limits and replacement-part availability.
- Destination, shipment arrangement and the product-specific documents requested by your logistics and compliance reviewers.
Ask the supplier to confirm these fields in the quotation and sample specification. A carton of visually identical toys can still require a different retail instruction sheet if the power arrangement changes.
Keep the approved battery and charger together
Follow the battery, charger and toy manufacturer's instructions. Do not use a NiMH-only charger for a LiPo pack. Do not charge a damaged or swollen pack, and do not leave charging unattended. A proposed chemistry or pack change should be reviewed by the responsible manufacturer before use.
This comparison helps organize sourcing questions; it does not authorize a battery conversion. For product selection, use the RC toy catalog and request the approved power specification for each selected item.

Cell-voltage definitions are documented in the Hitec X2 Ultima manual, commonly used terms on page 30. For identification and charging precautions, see Horizon Hobby's RC battery charging guide. Always use the current instructions for your actual battery and charger.
Buyer questions
Can I replace a NiMH pack with a LiPo pack that fits?
Physical fit does not establish compatibility. The toy electronics, voltage range, connector, protection and charger requirements must all be confirmed by the responsible manufacturer.
Does a higher mAh rating guarantee longer runtime?
No. A capacity figure alone does not establish runtime across different toys or conditions. Request a stated runtime method and compare the complete product and power system.
